God’s Blessings Hidden in Plain Sight: Why Discontent Blinds Us
It’s not about the number. It’s about trusting God’s timing and winning at the stage you’re in.
God is blessing you right now. And you probably can’t see it. Not because the blessings aren’t there, but because you’re looking for the wrong thing. You’re chasing a number. A degree by 22. A spouse by 25. Children by 30. A six-figure salary. A six-pack. A house worth X. Instagram followers. Status. And if you don’t hit that number by the timeline you set — you’re bitter. You grumble. You compare yourself to people who “hit the numbers.” And while you’re doing that, you’re blind to what God is actually building in you right now.
It’s Not About the Number
The number doesn’t matter. Getting married at 25 instead of 30 doesn’t make your marriage better. Making $100k instead of $200k doesn’t make you more successful. Benching 225 instead of 315 doesn’t make you stronger in the ways that matter. The number is just a marker. It’s not the point. The point is: Are you winning at the stage you’re in right now?
Paul says it perfectly: “Run in such a way as to get the prize... Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” (1 Corinthians 9:24-25) You’re running a race. But you’re not running against anyone else. You’re running your own race at your own pace in your own lane. And the only way to win is to compete fully in the stage you’re in right now — not thinking about the next stage, not comparing to someone else’s race, just running hard in your current lane.
God’s Plan Is Different for Everyone
God’s plan for your life is completely different from God’s plan for everyone else’s. Your timeline isn’t someone else’s timeline. Your calling isn’t someone else’s calling. Your numbers aren’t someone else’s numbers. Your training isn’t someone else’s training. And yet — you’re constantly comparing yourself to everyone else. You see someone get married at 23 and think you’re behind. You see someone with a six-pack and feel shame. You see someone’s Instagram and assume they have it all figured out. And you miss the entire point of God’s plan for YOUR life.
Paul understood this: “By the grace of God I am what I am... yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.” (1 Corinthians 15:10) By the grace of God, you are what you are. Not what they are. What you are. What God made you to be for God’s purposes. Every time you compare your life to someone else’s, you’re rejecting the stage you’re in right now. You’re saying to God: “I don’t trust that what You’re building in me right now is more important than what You’re building in them.” That comparison will keep you stuck longer than anything else. Your job isn’t to be where they are. Your job is to win at the stage you’re in.
The Israelites Grumbled Their Way to Forty Years
Look at the Old Testament. After God delivered the Israelites from Egypt with miracles, what did they do? They grumbled. For 40 years, they wandered the wilderness complaining about what they didn’t have. “We don’t have enough water. We don’t have enough food. We wish we were back in Egypt.” But God provided everything: manna from heaven, water from the rock, clothes that didn’t wear out, a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. They had everything. But they were so focused on reaching the Promised Land that they couldn’t appreciate the wilderness they were in.They couldn’t see that the wilderness was the training ground. That every day in the desert was building something essential in them. And because they couldn’t win at the stage they were in, they never made it to the next stage.
Winning Means Mastering Your Current Stage
If you’re single, win at being single. Not by thinking about marriage, but by using this season to build your character, deepen your faith, develop your gifts. If you’re in an entry-level job, win at that job. Not by wishing you were somewhere else, but by doing excellent work, learning everything you can, becoming valuable. If you’re broke, win at being broke. Not by obsessing over money, but by learning stewardship and appreciating what you have. If you’re weak, win at being weak. Not by hating your body, but by showing up to train, building consistency, trusting the process. Here’s the thing: you can’t move to the next stage if you haven’t won at this one. You can’t move from single to married and do it well if you didn’t win at singleness. You can’t move from entry-level to leadership if you didn’t win at being an employee. You can’t move from broke to wealthy if you didn’t win at stewardship. God won’t move you forward until you’ve mastered your current stage.
Failure Is Part of Winning
Failure doesn’t mean you’re losing. Failure is how you win. Psalm 34:19 says: “The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all.” Many troubles. Not zero troubles. Not a smooth path. Many troubles. And God delivers you through them. Each failure teaches you what works and what doesn’t. Each failure gets you closer to what actually works. You try something. It doesn’t work. You adjust. You try again. Each failure builds resilience — you’re proving to yourself that you can handle disappointment. And each failure reveals who you really are. Are you the kind of person who quits or the kind who gets back up? Are you the kind who blames others or the kind who takes responsibility? Failure reveals your character. And God uses failure to build character.
God’s Timing and Strategy
God isn’t just waiting for you to reach a number. God is strategically building you up. His strategy involves seasons. Stages. Training. Failure. Growth. Deuteronomy 8:2-3 explains: “The Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble you and to test you... He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”
God was strategically building them. The wilderness wasn’t punishment. It was part of God’s strategy to develop them into people who could handle the Promised Land. Hunger taught them dependence. Scarcity taught them faith. Failure taught them humility. And by the time they were ready, they weren’t the same people anymore.
The stage you’re in right now is exactly where God needs you to be. Not because you’re stuck. Not because you’re behind. Because there’s something you need to learn. Something you need to build. Something you need to become.Maybe you’re in a waiting season and God is teaching you patience. Maybe you’re in a struggle season and God is teaching you faith. Maybe you’re in a failure season and God is teaching you resilience. Maybe you’re in a lonely season and God is teaching you that He’s enough. You can’t skip any of these seasons. You have to win at each one. James 1:2-4 puts it perfectly: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Testing produces perseverance. Perseverance produces maturity. But you have to go through the testing.
Numbers Are Temporary. Growth Is Permanent.
A number is temporary. Growth is permanent. You can hit a number and then lose it. You can reach a goal and then fall back. You can get the promotion and then fail. But growth? Character? Who you become? That stays with you forever. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28) All things. Including the things that don’t look good from the outside. The failed relationship — that built character. The lost job — that built humility. The unanswered prayer — that built faith. The long wait — that built patience. God is using everything to build you up. Not just the wins. The losses too.
Trust God’s Timing
If you got everything you wanted when you wanted it, you wouldn’t be ready for it. You’d get married before you were mature enough. You’d get the job before you had the character to handle it. You’d get the money before you had the wisdom to steward it. You’d get the strength before you had the discipline to maintain it. “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise... Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9) Patient. With you. So that you can become who you need to be. That’s love. That’s strategy. That’s God.
When you stop chasing numbers and start winning at your stage, you’re finally free. Free from comparison. Free from anxiety about timelines. Free from shame about not hitting arbitrary goals. Free to actually grow. Hebrews 12:1-2 says: “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” The race marked out for you. Not someone else’s race. Yours. Run it. Win at the stage you’re in. Trust God’s strategy. Accept the failures. Keep going. And watch what happens when you stop obsessing about the number and start focusing on the person you’re becoming.
