Build Each Other Up: Stop the Lack Mindset, Start Living God's Will

After 15 years in fitness, I've discovered the real problem. And it's not what you think.

I've been in the fitness industry for over 15 years.

And in all that time, I've noticed something that cuts across every client, every athlete, every person who walks through the door:

We're all living in a constant state of lack.

"I'm not strong enough."
"I don't have enough time."
"I need more results."
"I'm not disciplined enough."

And here's what I've realized: this lack mindset doesn't just make us miserable. It makes us do the things that cause our setbacks in the first place.

When you're focused on what you lack, you eat poorly. You skip workouts. You give up when things get hard.

When you're focused on what you lack spiritually, you compromise your values. You avoid serving others. You live small instead of bold.

But what if I told you there's another way?

What if the answer isn't getting more — but believing you already have what you need in Christ?

The Wilderness of Scarcity

Look at the Old Testament. After God delivered the Israelites from Egypt with miracles that still blow our minds — what did they do?

They grumbled.

For 40 years, they wandered the wilderness complaining about what they didn't have.

"We don't have enough water."
"We don't have enough food."
"God, why did You bring us out here?"

And here's the thing: God provided everything. Manna from heaven. Water from the rock. Everything they needed.

But because they lived in a mindset of scarcity — because they focused on what they lacked — they never entered the Promised Land.

Their lack mindset didn't just make them unhappy. It kept them from God's will for their lives.

The Lack Mindset Is a Lie

Here's what Scripture says:

"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus." — Philippians 4:19

Not some of your needs. All of them.

"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'" — Hebrews 13:5

Contentment comes from knowing you have what you need.

The lie of the lack mindset is this: "You're not enough. You need more to be worthy. You need more to matter."

But that's not true.

You've Already Been Given Gifts

Here's what people miss:

"But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it... So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." — Ephesians 4:7-13

Read that again.

Grace has already been given to you.

Christ has already given you gifts.

You're not waiting to be gifted. You're not lacking gifts. You already have them.

The question isn't: "Do I have gifts?"

The question is: "Am I using them?"

And here's the truth: The lack mindset keeps you from using the gifts you already have.

When you're focused on what you don't have, you can't see what you do have.

When you're living in shame about your weaknesses, you can't celebrate your strengths.

When you believe the lie that you're not enough, you hide your gifts instead of sharing them.

But when you stop focusing on lack and start believing in the gifts Christ gave you — everything changes.

When You Use Your Gifts, God's Glory Is Revealed

Here's what happens when you actually live out your individual purpose through faith:

Others experience the glory of God.

"Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another." — Hebrews 10:23-25

When you live boldly in your gifts — when you use them to build others up, to serve, to glorify God — people see God.

They see Him in your discipline. They see Him in your encouragement. They see Him in your faithfulness.

But here's the tragedy:

When you're too hard on yourself, when you shrink from God's grace and holiness, when you hide your gifts because you believe the lie that you're not enough — God's glory becomes silenced.

The world doesn't see Him. Because you're not living Him out.

"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible." — Hebrews 11:1-3

Faith is assurance about what you do not see.

You can't see how God will use your gifts. You can't see how your faithfulness will impact others. But faith says: I'm going to trust that it matters. I'm going to live it out. I'm going to glorify God with what He gave me.

And when you do, the glory of God is no longer silent. It's radiant.

Here's What I've Discovered

When you stop focusing on what you lack — when you stop believing the lie that you're not enough — something miraculous happens:

You stop doing the things that cause your setbacks in the first place.

You're not constantly eating poorly because you're running from self-shame about what you lack.

You're not skipping workouts because you've already decided you lack discipline.

You're not giving up because you believe the lie that you lack the strength to continue.

Instead, you start stewarding the gifts you have. And as you steward, you experience progress.

And progress builds momentum. And momentum builds faith.

And faith is what moves you from a life of lack to a life of God's will.

From Lack to God's Will

Here's the shift:

When you stop focusing on what you lack spiritually, you start living out God's will for your lives.

You stop making excuses and start using your gifts.

You stop hiding and start serving.

You stop living small and start living bold.

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship." — Romans 12:1

When you steward your body as an act of worship — when you train knowing that every rep is honoring God — you're no longer living in lack. You're living out God's will.

When you use the gifts Christ gave you to build others up instead of tearing them down — when you encourage instead of criticize — you're no longer living in lack. You're living out God's will.

And when you live out God's will boldly, others experience the glory of God through your faith.

The Goal at Thumos

Here's what we're building:

We want you to leave the gym knowing something: You're already enough. Christ gave you gifts. And those gifts are meant to be used.

We want you to leave knowing: When you steward what you have — your body, your discipline, your faith, your gifts — you don't just transform yourself. You reveal God's glory to everyone around you.

Because when you stop focusing on lack, you stop the behaviors that cause setbacks.

And when you stop the setbacks, you start living out what God created you for.

And when you live out your purpose with boldness and faith, God's glory is no longer silenced. It shines through your deeds.

Not a life of endless wanting. Not a life of constant comparison.

A life of grace. A life of purpose. A life where God's glory is revealed through your faithfulness.

So What Now?

Stop living in the lack mindset.

Stop believing the lie that you're not enough.

Stop ignoring the gifts Christ already gave you.

Stop hiding your faith and your purpose.

Start believing you have what you need in Christ.

Start stewarding your body. Start using your gifts. Start building others up.

Start living boldly so that others can experience the glory of God through your faith.
